CBD aka Hemp Oil products are becoming increasingly popular for treating human health needs, and the trend is trickling down to pets. CBD (Cannabidiol) based supplements and infused treats for both cats and dogs continues to grow immensely in popularity as more pet owners are discovering the potential benefits. Even though this is a newer type of product on the market, and there are a lot of options, shoppers need some assistance in choosing what CBD is best for their pet.
Herbal alternatives for pets continue to grow in demand as consumers are gaining knowledge, said Lorin Grow, owner of Furry Face in Redlands, California “At SuperZoo, the National Show for Pet Retailers, in 2016, there were only a few booths exhibiting CBD products. In 2017, it was a flood of new CBD exhibitors. And I expect even more next year.”
Chelsea Joyce, VP of sales for Pet Releaf in Englewood, Colorado noted, “The driving interest in CBD products comes at a time when pet owners and retailers are starting to recognize that pharmaceutical drugs can sometimes be harmful or even make a pet’s health issue worse due to side effects. As medical cannabis has become increasingly acceptable, people are beginning to understand it might also be a positive option for their pets.”
“Consumers are seeking out transparency and education in CBD products—just like they want with the rest of the pet products they purchase from the independent retailer,” Joyce said. “Unfortunately, there have been no regulations set up within the CBD world. In order to keep customers and retailers properly informed, it is up to the manufacturer to educate them on the difference between the products that are out there.”
Many companies are getting in on the CBD for pets action. Pet Releaf offers a 10 pack of Pet Releaf vegan capsules with U.S. Department of Agriculture certified organic full-spectrum hemp oil. The product makes a great trial size to test out with pets.
Treatibles in Oakland, California, recently introduced a line of grain-free hard chews that come in four flavors: Turkey, Pumpkin, Tater’s Sweet Potato Tots and Blueberry. The chews contain phytocannabinoid-rich oil extracted from whole-plant medicinal-grade hemp grown in the United States, according to the company.
Minneapolis, Minnesota based Petabis Organics recently debuted an expansive line of CBD (cannabidiol) phytocannabinoid-rich hemp oils, capsules, snacks and topical salves.
And Denver, Colorado’s Bark Avenue released a double-functional large-breed joint and hip formulation that contains 300 milligrams of glucosamine, 5 milligrams of CBD, and 110 milligrams of chondroitin per treat.
There’s no doubt that education is incredibly valuable in the CBD category. Heidi Nevala, President and founder Petabis Organics, says not all CBD is created equal, and it’s important to understand the differences.
“Ask for documentation regarding your supplier’s cultivation, harvest and extraction process. As a reseller partner, your supplier should happily supply this type of information in detail. You should also verify if they are offering an isolate or actual full-spectrum CBD oil. Most CBD products on the market are isolates, but we do not manufacture CBD isolate oils. Petabis Organics products are produced via NES Vapor Distillation, a patented extraction process which produces the highest levels of naturally occurring terpenes and cannabinoids of any activated edible oil extract in the world.” – Heidi Nevala, President Petabis Organics
That’s where an educated retailer comes in. We know it is important for pet owners to educate themselves on the benefits and choices out there, but staff members at pet stores need to be educated as well. It is important to train staff so they understand what CBD products are, what they can and can’t be used for, and how they’re different from human products.
There are a lot of ways marketing campaigns can be used to draw attention to CBD aka Hemp Oil products and drive new interest. Marketing efforts also give opportunity to educate the public. Blogging is always a great outlet to get people interested in CBD.
