Nickelback Asked to Perform During Halftime of Detroit Lions Thanksgiving Day Game…and the People of Detroit are Pissed
The Detroit Lions are having a very good football season. They are 6-2, and actually fun to watch. They play every Thanksgiving, and usually it is that Detroit game that nobody cares about. They always play second fiddle to the Dallas Cowboys game. But not so fast my friend. This Thanksgiving, they will be playing a huge division game vs. the Green Bay Packers. Everyone will be getting fat this holiday glued to this one.
Every Thanksgiving game, there is a halftime performance that other Sunday games don’t have. This year, your halftime entertainment is none other than Canadian, stoner, shit band – Nickelback! Now before you hate on Nickelback, I should have you know that Billboard named them ‘Band if the Decade’ for what that may be worth to you.
Well, it seems like folks are not happy with the choice. So unhappy that an online petition was started on change.org to Replace Nickelback as the halftime show for the Thanksgiving game.
The petition already has 18,000+ signatures!
The petition has a synopsis for why people should sign it :
This game is nationally televised, do we really want the rest of the US to associate Detroit with Nickelback? Detroit is home to so many great musicians and they chose Nickelback?!?!?! Does anyone even like Nickelback? Is this some sort of ploy to get people to leave their seats during halftime to spend money on alcoholic beverages and concessions? This is completely unfair to those of us who purchased tickets to the game. At least the people watching at home can mute their TVs. The Lions ought to think about their fans before choosing such an awful band to play at halftime.
There are a myriad of reasons for why fans do not want Nickelback performing. From they just plain suck, to the fact that they are not even from Detroit.
Those defending the band say that on the band’s 2009 global tour, metro Detroit hosted three shows — including a sold-out two-night stand at DTE Energy Music Theatre. It was that venue’s only multiple-night show of the year, and the only two-night stand on the band’s entire U.S. leg.
As with other Canadian acts through the years, border-town Detroit was an early Nickelback adopter: Former WRIF-FM (101.1) program director Doug Podell says the station was among the first in the country to play Nickelback’s music as the group emerged at the turn of the last decade.
“They broke out of here, they’ve been extremely popular here, and I think they’ve sold out pretty much every show here since the beginning,” Podell said today. “Rock audiences ought to be happy about these guys — they’re one of the few rock acts left that can still play a halftime show. There aren’t many of that stature anymore.”
Those that sign the petition get to leave a reason for why they sign it. Needless to say, some of them are classics including the following :
- Nickelback is to music what Hitler was to European Jews. End of story.
- Nickelback is the worst group ever. I don’t want to be sitting around with my family and have to listen to even more annoying people.
- I probably won’t even watch the game, but if i can help stopping one nickelback gig, i’ll know i have done good work.
- I’d rather see Rebbecca Black unleash her newest single “Thursday” at halftime than have to listen to Nickelback
