Did The Guys From Pawn Stars Really Buy A Missile?

A recent TMZ.com story on the guys from “Pawn Stars” buying an albeit harmless missile has apparently drawn the attention of the government.

The entertainment web site is reporting officials with the U.S. Air Force Special Investigations Unit visited Rick Harrison and his team from the reality TV series Tuesday because of a story it posted citing a deal where Harrison and his team purchased an AIM-120 AMRAAM missile guidance system and missile parts, without any live war head, last week.

According to the story, the missile’s system was examined and declared no longer active. The web site also reported that the agents told those inside the Las Vegas “Gold and Silver Pawn” that they first heard about the purchase from someone who saw the story on TMZ.

TMZ said the seller was a woman who said she inherited the missile parts from her father who bought them at a 1980s military auction and said she had the correct paperwork to show she could legally sell the parts.

A representative from the show confirmed to TMZ that agents had come to the shop. The same person also insisted “”If the Air Force wants the missile back, we will gladly adhere to their request.”

According to the website for the U.S. Air Force, the AMRAAM missile is a medium-range, active radar homing air-to-air missile, which uses high-explosive blast fragmentation. It weighs 335 pounds and has a range of more than 20 miles. It was deployed in September of 1991. The Air Force lists the price at $386,000. The amount Harrison paid for the missile system was not immediately known.

So is it legal for a pawn shop to purchase a missile system? “As far as we know, the missile is 100 percent not illegal,” “Pawn Stars” producer Brent Montgomery tells FOX411. “One time, a grenade came in and Rick was like, ‘You have to get that out of my shop right now!’ It wasn’t live, but you never know. I can’t have people thinking that they can take grenades into the shop—ballistic missiles, OK—but no grenades!”
