Phelps Falls Short in First Race, but Lochte Delivers
Micheal Phelps hit the water for the 400 IM finals today at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. The storied American Olympian almost didn’t make it to the finals, after finishing the prelim in the eighth and final entry spot for the finals.
Once in the finals, Phelps lost his first race in years, coming in fourth place. Phelps may be lacking some of his former motivation since he already has 16 Gold Medals and is arguably the best athlete in Olympic history.
This year’s 400 IM Gold still stayed with the stars and stripes, though, as American newcomer Ryan Lochte picked up the slack for Phelps, and took home the first Gold Medal for the US in this year’s Games. [SBNation]
